Maui, Land and Pineapple, HI – Kapalua Resort Coastal Trail Feasibility Study
Background
Charlier Associates worked for Kapalua Land Company, a subsidiary of Maui Land and Pineapple Company, the master developer of the internationally acclaimed 23,000-acre luxury Kapalua Resort on Maui's western shore. CAI participated in a planning charrette in June 2004 to help create a development/preservation vision for Greater Kapalua, and led a subsequent six-day effort in October 2004 to plan an initial 3.2-mile section of the Kapalua Coastal Trail.
Key Project Recommendations
- Develop a trail that traverse a variety of environments and stays as close to the ocean as possible.
- Provide alternatives to the Highway 30 roadway corridor whenever feasible, and respect the privacy of adjacent properties.
- Construct a rugged, natural surface hiking trail that will traverse lava outcrops, wind through heavily vegetated areas, and climb from sea level to over 100 feet.
- Take advantage of pristine views of Honokahua, Mokuleia and Honolua bays.
