Wheat Ridge, CO Pedestrian & Bicycle Streetscape Design

Charlier Associates, Inc. assisted the City of Wheat Ridge, CO, in moving forward with implementation of the vision of both its Streetscape Design  Manual and Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. Our work integrated broad recommendations of the two documents while assessing the feasibility of restriping and/or reconstruction of 13 roadway corridors.

CAI examined how to realistically balance conflicting needs to create complete streets within constrained urban corridors throughout the community. This work was a hands-on application of how to transform typical design manual standards into workable solutions within limited right-of-ways, and where to acquire additional right-of-way if necessary. For each corridor segment, CAI provided in-field analysis, recommended roadway cross-sections, justifications for trade-offs between modes, and three detailed implementation options addressing low-cost, medium-cost and high-cost alternatives. We also expanded the community’s design tool kit to include prototype treatments for various intersection designs that accommodate bicycle lanes.
